Safari Overview and Information

Priced from: Approx 75 Kms from Dar es Salaam

General Info:

Bagamoyo lays 75kms north of Dar es Salaam. It was the first point of the slave caravan courses and also the end of the white missionaries. Whilst in Bagamoyo, stop at Kaole Ruins (dating back to the former part of the 15th century), and the initial Roman Catholic Church in Tanganyika assembled by the Germans in the 1880's. Also visit the museum which caters many historical artifacts. There is also a marvelous beach where you can swim and take pleasure in a picnic lunch.

Bagamoyo was discovered towards the end of the 18th century as a mini port trading in dried fish, gum, cobalt and salt. Bagamoyo also supplied as a caravan entreport, with merchants coming from the far areas of the interior, such as Morogoro and Usambara. Later on, it was for Ivory and slave trade improved its significance in the 19th century.

Bagamoyo's magnitude started to decline when in 1940 the Sultan of Oman, Seyyid Said, determined to shift his capital from Muscat to Zanzibar, to be nearer to his territory along the Eastern African coast.

Convoy would come to the coast from the inside with merchandise like clothing, wire, beads and other ornaments, and would arrive with slaves transporting Ivory. Therefore, Bagamoyo happened to be the major entreport for the slave and ivory trade on the mainland.

Well-known European explorers like Burton, Stanley, Speke and Livingstone all went through Bagamoyo. The Holy Ghost fathers set up their first mission post in Bagamoyo in 1868, and it was in its chapel that Dr. Livingstone's body was fetched from the inside and reserved prior to being transported back to Europe.
