Great wildebeest migration is one of the most interesting expedition in the world if not before or after gorilla trekking experience. Here animals moves in millions every year in Serengeti and Mara and they are always accompanied by large numbers of zebra, grant’s gazelle, Thompson’s gazelle, elands and impalas across the greater Serengeti – Mara ecosystem.
This African expedition begins in Serengeti from mid December to March. From this period of time, the grass plains of the southern Serengeti around Ndutu and the Ngorongoro conservation are short and alive with migrant herds of wildebeest, zebra and gazelles.
The wildebeest migrate around the Serengeti, and into the Masai Mara for the sole purpose of following the rainfall. For their calving from December – March they always begin their cycle in the southern Serengeti area of Ndutu and follow wherever the grass is greener.
One of the most requested events in the migration is the arrival crossing of the Mara River that occurs around late July to August with parts of September and again on their return south, around the last two weeks of October through early November.
From the vast Serengeti plains to the champagne colored hills of Kenya’s Masai Mara over 2+ million wildebeest and 200,000 zebra and gazelle, migrate in a clockwise fashion over 1,800 miles each year in search of rain ripened grass.
The wildebeest migration happens in different sections of Serengeti National Park those are: in the southern sector (Ndutu area), the central or western sector (Grumeti River) and finally in the Northern sector Mara River.
